Do you want to experience something more authentic in Costa Rica than a hotel?
Do you want to learn or improve your Spanish?
Would you like to learn how to cook tortillas or gallo pinto?
Introducing eco-friendly holiday homestays and Spanish classes in San Gerardo de Rivas, a quaint village with a cloud forest backdrop in unspoiled southern Costa Rica.
Jenny Moss, founder of Costa Rica Holiday Homestays and director of Proyecto San Gerardo “Our project volunteers told us one of their best experiences during their stay in San Gerardo was their homestay. They feel welcomed as part of the family and enjoy delicious home cooked meals, improve their Spanish in constant conversation and share in family games, outings and chores. It seemed obvious that visitors would also get far more out of their time in Costa Rica if they could experience a homestay.” Jenny has a lifetime experience working with people: as local librarian, community coordinator with Canadian Red Cross and as Director of community-based Proyecto San Gerardo. She directs Costa Rica Holiday Homestays and coordinates international visits. She’s also driver, English-speaking tour guide and is available 24/7 for our visitors.
Pedro Monge – is co-owner of Costa Rica Holiday Homestays and also a lifelong resident of San Gerardo de Rivas. He is your tour leader on foot or horseback and is well-known for his humour. Pedro brings to life the history and the nature of our beautiful region and is happiest chatting with visitors, young and old, in whatever language. Visit his cafetal (coffee farm) or the trapiche (sugar mill) and get a taste for the traditional life of years gone by in Costa Rica.
San Gerardo de Rivas is a small, rural community on the flanks of Mt Chirripo – the tallest mountain in Costa Rica and second tallest in Central America. Here life is a celebration of the natural environment. Traditionally producers of coffee, dairy and vegetables, life in San Gerardo follows the rhythm of the soil and the sun. Families rise early to work in the morning light before the heat of midday and by mid afternoon gather together to enjoy company, an early meal, practice dancing or just relax.
The homestay experience is a great way to learn or improve your Spanish and learn about the culture. Visits at Christmas or Semana Santa will open your eyes to traditions of bygone years, or enjoy opportunities to hike, ride horses, bird-watch, swim in the rivers or visit the many waterfalls. Our Spanish school offers lessons for beginner to advanced level with a local Spanish teacher. Spend one or two hours daily refining your grammar and pronunciation and practice your new skills with your homestay family. The school is open to all ages as private students, couples or in groups at sliding rates. Transportation is provided from San Isidro – the nearest ‘big town’ 45 minutes away, and also around San Gerardo though most attractions are within walking distance. Enjoy hot springs, visit a truchero and restaurant, ride by horseback to neighbouring villages, or experience coffee picking or working a traditional ‘trapiche’ or sugar mill. Many tour options are available and organized for visitors at an additional cost.
