Climate

Costa Rica enjoys two significant seasons: wet and dry. The temperature does not change much at all, so this will help you in deciding when to visit. There are distinct advantages to both seasons:

Summer: dry of course, hot even – so this time of year is great for all-day outdoor activities though the dust and the heat can mean a daily dip is a must! Migratory birds appear and because there is less food around bird watching is very successful and you can be sure to make a great bird count. There are many fiestas to enjoy in San Gerardo and surrounding villages, including of course the famous Carrera Chirripó. Being high season you should make your reservations early. Summer is also good for a combined trip to the Pacific coast, Corcovado National Park, or to volcanic Mt. Arenal or the Central Valley.

Winter: if the afternoon rain refreshes you can win out by enjoying Costa Rica´s growing season and the lushness and abundance of our gardens and fincas. Pick your own bananas, sweet lemons and oranges. Avocados, mango and lychee (called mamones here) are cheap. And try something new: anonas or custard apples, joquotes and pejibayes. This time of year there are fewer visitors so the peace and quiet is at its best. Tip: try May – August. During this time you will enjoy the same beautiful sunny mornings and the rain is restricted to the afternoons. September and October are wetter, but if you want to visit the Caribbean coast as well (Puerto Viejo, Bocas del Toro in Panama) this is the best time to be here.

Generally speaking, the dry season is from December– May, and the wet season the opposite, October being the rainiest month. The dry season is marked by uninterrupted days of warm, sunny weather, and the wet season has daily rainfall – usually in the afternoon, that can be very heavy. In addition, because of its mountain location, the temperature can be cooler than at the coast – a refreshing difference as air conditioning is unnecessary and nights are cool enough to allow for easy sleep. Pack a sweater for the evening year round.
