Neighbours from Térraba visit to learn about Costa Rica Holiday Homestay program

Last Monday Costa Rica Holiday Homestay hosted a visit from the indigenous community of Térraba to San Gerardo de Rivas. The senoras from the village nearby to Buenos Aires about two hours’ drive south-west of San Gerardo, are members of the Boruca tribe who live in various settlements in the Talamanca mountain range. They have a long history of art and culture as well as a distinctive language; see: http://www.boruca.org for more information about the Boruca.
Getting together was a chance for us to get to know each other better, and to share Costa Rica Holiday Homestay’s development as a local social enterprise benefitting women in the region. Getting together for a delicious lunch featuring torta de oja de remolacha, picadillo de aracache and fresh local salads and fruit, we shared our experiences with visitors from faraway places and the wonder of learning about new cultures as well as respresenting Costa Rica.
As a social enterprise Costa Rica Holiday Homestay is committed to helping women in various communities explore ways to support themselves while building awareness of cultures, beliefs and language. In the near future we hope to offer tours of one or more days to the Boruca village in Térraba to our guests. Contact us for more information about opportunities to learn more about indigenous peoples in Costa Rica.

PLUS! If you are planning to visit San Gerardo de Rivas during January – March we will be offering traditional cooking lessonsat Café Bambú, Proyecto San Gerardo’s community centre in the village. Learn how to make tortillas, gallo pinto or (wáter of the toad!) from delicious and all-local ingredients. More info here next month about times and rates!

Learn Spanish at Costa Rica Holiday Homestay

Perhaps one of the main reasons you’re considering Costa Rica Holiday Homestay as your vacation choice is to learn or improve your Spanish.  Today, more and more people are using Spanish in the workplace, not only in South and Central America but in the USA, Spain, parts of SE Asia and more. Spanish is the third most commonly spoken language in the world and it’s comparatively easy to learn (well, when compared with Mandarin or German!)

Living with a Costa Rica family will give you lots of opportunity to practice your Spanish; but you need a framework or basis of grammar to help you too. Costa Rica Holiday Homestay always recommends beginners or close-to-beginners take a course of lessons as well so that the theory and the practice can work hand-in-hand while you are here in Costa Rica.

We work in conjunction with Alex Zuniga of Creer Language School of San Isidro de General. Alex has taught both in the public high school system and in private schools before he established his own learning centre. Since Alex is bilingual he teaches English and Spanish and incorporates an important cultural element into his teaching so you learn appropriate expressions, avoid embarrassing language pitfalls and enjoy the interesting history around Spanish as spoken in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Holiday Homestay offers three kinds of classes:  private, couples and in groups in two or four hour sessions.  Initially, Alex will assess your level of Spanish and assign you a level, and this is a good time for you to mention exactly what you would like out of your lessons:  pronunciation exercises, grammar practice or corrected speech.  We focus mainly on conversational Spanish though lessons can be adjusted to include special Interests, for example: Spanish for business, how to write a good letter in Spanish etc. Classes take place at your homestay or at Café Bambú, a cosy coffee shop in the centre of San Gerardo where you can relax over a cuppa before or after your class!

See Spanish Classes for more information about costs

We are sure you will find your Spanish improves considerably while you are with us here in San Gerardo. The village is 100% Spanish-speaking so that your homestay practice can extend to buying items in the village store or ordering a beer:  ‘Una cerveza por favor!’

Pura vida!

A typical Costa Rica Homestay visit

CRHH guests enjoy their tour to Gallery

Our guests Marjorie and Suzanne arrived in late April for their Costa Rica vacation and were met off the bus from San Jose by Jenny and Pedro in the bright red CRHH pickup. ¾ hour later they were in San Gerardo and meeting their hosts Bernan and Shirley at their lovely house in the grounds of the ‘Secret Gardens’

Says Suzanne: The home was comfortable and immaculate, and our family was perfect! We were free to use any part of the home, inside and out. We very much appreciated having our laundry done.

Jenny and Pedro introduced the guests and made things simple by chatting about meal times, food preferences and keys with everyone present.

About their meals Suzanne says: The food was plentiful, healthy, and delicious! The family was flexible about mealtimes (depending on our tours) and we loved the “hiker’s lunch” prepared for us and wrapped in banana leaves for us to carry. Also, we so much appreciated that meals were a family experience, and that each family member, no matter how busy, took time to sit and chat with us. The patio eating area (surrounded by those amazing gardens) was lovely and comfortable regardless of the weather.

The next day Pedro took the guests on a tour of “Quesos Suizos” – the local cheese ‘factory’ where delicious Swiss-type cheese is made by hand from the family’s own dairy.

Says Suzanne: “It was a real thrill to milk a cow for the first time and to hand-mold the fresh cheese. The explanations and descriptions we heard from the owner and from Pedro, their attention to us, the beauty of the place itself – all of these enhanced our experience. As was true of each of the experiences for us organized by CRHH, organization was excellent, and the cost to us amazingly low.

On their last day our guests chose to visit the traditional Trapiche (sugar mill) and also hike through the beautiful neighboring village of Los Angeles to visit the folk art gallery of Carmen Monge: Arte Mia. This tour is arranged so that there is time to hike, visit the hot springs, or enjoy lunch at the trout restaurant, and return back in time to watch the final process. Kattia accompanied our guests to Arte Mia and they wrote:

The Trapiche: Once again, the experience could not have been better. We learned so much! Spending time with Pedro and his father really helped us to understand how hard people work to produce things we take for granted, and to see firsthand the family farm tradition. Being allowed to participate – not to mention being allowed to taste the product at each stage of production – was so much fun, and very satisfying; we understood the process so much better as a result. (This was true of the cheese factory as well.) We also appreciated that Jenny organized the walking trip to the artist’s gallery with Kattia (she was excellent – very professional and personable as well) to happen during the hours when the liquid was simmering, and Pedro’s extra trip to get us back in time to finish the process.

To Arte Mia: A strenuous and beautiful walk – I loved it! Kattia shared lots of information about the surrounding area and answered all our questions. This was a perfect example of tours tailored to guests – ample opportunity to bird watch, as well as to enjoy nature, see people’s homes, and learn something about their lives. The artist’s lovely house, garden and gallery were open to us, and we were able to purchase paintings we’ll always treasure at an amazingly low price.

Finally, Shirley and Bernan took time themselves to share some hidden treasures about San Gerardo – in the evening they took a walk up to Don Macho Elizondo’s sculpture gallery at El Pelicano Hotel, and enjoyed a beer and karaoke at the pub called ‘El Bosque’.

Suzanne says: Our host family was perfect – they made us feel so welcome, sharing their mealtimes and their leisure time as well. They took us on walks, showed us places we might otherwise have missed, and invited us to relax and talk with them in the evenings.

The next day, after a quick visit to the local school so the two teachers could experience a typical Costa Rican school, it was time to leave. Jenny drove our guests back to San Isidro and bid them farewell – till the next time. Both guests want to bring their husbands back on a future visit!

Marjorie says: This program offers a chance to learn about the traditions of Costa Rica in a warm and welcoming family environment amid the beauty of the mountains

So what are you waiting for… Be our guests!
